PoliceListed lists law enforcement agencies with general police authority, which includes the power
to make arrests and enforce criminal laws in regards to the general public, even if they are not
traditional police departments.
For example, some correctional and parole agencies are granted full law enforcement authority over the general public by law,
while others have authority limited to inmates and individuals on probation or parole, even if their officers are POST-certified or have completed a police academy.
Only agencies whose officers consistently have the authority of a police officer are included in our lists.
This creates a seperation between agencies with police authority and those without,
which is important for users to understand when researching law enforcement agencies, because not all
agencies with law enforcement duties have the same level of authority.
**Note:**
Although some agencies do not normally have law enforcement authority over the general public, their authority may be temporarily expanded in certain situations,
such as through mutual aid agreements, declared emergencies, public safety incidents, special events, or civil disturbances. In these cases, officers may exercise powers
beyond their usual duties as authorized by law.
Agencies that provide primary police services for a specific area, such as responding to calls, or patrolling the area, will be classified as General Law Enforcement. (City police, Sheriffs, Park Rangers, State Troopers)
Agencies that primarily provide secondary, on-view, or investigative law enforcement services will be labeled as Specialized Law Enforcement. ( Correctional Officers, Investigators, Baliffs, Game Wardens, Alcohol & Tobacco Agents, Commercial Vehicle Agents)
